Stephen Pedley
Stephen is a Ewell based Artist with over 30 years experience taking part in group and solo exhibitions primarily in London and in the West Country.
Experiences, rather than observations or portraits have long been the focus of Stephen’s Artwork. Stephen began painting journeys through, or time spent in an environment. Stephen grew up in North Devon and has a life long love of the sea and its presence as an ever changing entity. Coastal life has stimulated an interest in mans desire for authority and legacy. Something nature and the sea has little respect for.
This has in turn prompted explorations of walls and signs. Evidence of mans attempts to contain, protect, own and separate. Erosion and decay become clear demonstrations of time passing. A legacy of futility and impermanence. “I was here. I was important?” What will we leave behind? Observation of nature can reawaken us to the worth of life and the impermanence of it.
Stephen’s mixed media practice incorporates materials found in the environments he works within, or pertinent to the subject matter. His love of oil paints nature is immediately apparent. Stephen aims to sympathetically draw materials together towards realising his vision. Freely expressive scribbles, strokes and scratches are built up within a planned structure. Marks made without pretence. The controlled work of an erudite expressionist.
